4 week course syllabus - Let it Bead Studio

4 week course $175.00 per student.
Tuesday during the day from 12pm to 3pm or Tuesday evenings from 6pm to 9pm, (students choice).  
3 hour sessions each Tuesday for 4 consecutive weeks.

Supplies needed for class:
Each student will need to purchase their own glass in a variety of colors in 104 COE, in addition to the
class fee.
A small variety of glass will be available to purchase in class from AZSGB (cash or check only).
Torch use (gas and oxygen), kiln use, and tool use will be provided in the cost of the class.

DAY 1
Basic introduction to supplies and tools.   
         
A. Torch - Basic description of torches and use.
B. Fuel/Oxygen- Learn how to safely turn on and turn off fuel and oxygen.
C. Glass - Basic COE information.
(striking colors, opaque, transparent, solid, encased (filigrana), dichroic)
Proper  heating, annealing temperatures, compatibility, soft glass/hard glass).
D. Glasses - Didymium glasses.
Eye shield for safety from popping glass, as well as added protection from soda
flare from glass in the flame, this is harmless, but some are more sensitive.
Allows you to see through the soda flare and see to work easier in the flame.
E. Mandrels - Discuss about sizes and needs.
F. Bead release - Discuss the use of bead separation
G. Demonstration on preparing mandrels.
G. Tools - Discuss basics of tools needed for making and cleaning beads.
H. Kiln - Discuss basic information about kiln and proper safety and care when using.

Safety Tips - Basic tips to working safely with hot glass.
A. Eye protection - Discuss the necessity of glasses for working.
B. Burn prevention - Discuss the safety of working around a torch,  from burns to
safety  precautions.

Lighting Torch - Demonstration on lighting torch. Students will practice lighting torches. Turning Gas
and Oxygen on in proper order. Adjusting flame, Distinguishing flame in proper order.

Pulling Stringer - Demonstration on pulling stringers.
A. Proper techniques when introducing the glass to the flame and pulling stringers.
B. Students will practice pulling stringers.

Making a basic bead - Demonstration and on making a bead.
A. Preparing mandrels.
B. Igniting and adjusting the torch.
C. Forming a bead - Learning how to introduce glass into the flame, proper techniques in applying glass
to mandrel, working in the flame (gravity, rotation, keeping glass in flame while working to prevent
cracking), safely placing in kiln when finished.
D. Students will be allowed to practice several spacer beads.
E. Extinguishing torches - turn off gas and oxygen in proper order.
F. Cleaning area, returning tools.


DAY 2
Address questions from previous class.

Cleaning Beads - Learning basics for removing our beads from the mandrel and preparing them for
future use.
A. Removing our beads from the mandrels. Twist off bead using hands or vise-grips.
B. Cleaning your bead - Demonstration on using bead reamers.
C. Students will have time to clean their beads from previous class.

Making Beads
A. Demonstration on applying the stringer we made in previous class. Basics on stringer use, stringer
control. Raised and smooth designs, layers, dots, swirls, etc.
B. Students will practice making spacer beads with stringer designs.
B. Extinguishing torch - turn off gas and oxygen in proper order.
C. Cleaning area, returning tools.


DAY 3
Address any questions from previous class.
Students will have time to clean beads from previous class.

Making Beads
A. Shaping beads with presses. Demonstration with presses.
B. Encasing beads. Demonstration on encasing, (stripes, flowers, plunged bubbles).
C. Students will pull more stringer then practice new techniques.
D. Extinguishing torch - turn off gas and oxygen in proper order.
E. Cleaning area, returning tools.


DAY 4
Address any questions from previous class.
students will have time to clean beads from previous class.

Making Beads
A. Demonstration on sculptural work (Seashell and Bird).
B. Students will pull more stringer then practice new techniques and practice combining all techniques
learned in previous classes.
C. Extinguishing torch - turn off gas and oxygen in proper order.
D. Cleaning area, returning tools.

April - 4 week course

May - 4 week course

* 4 week course $175.00 per student. Payment for classes must be made at least one week before
classes start to secure a spot in the course. There will be a maximum of 6 slots available per day
course and 6 slots available per evening course each month.
The classes will be filled on a first come basis.
